lighting at bus stops
2022
The aim of this project was to increase the subjective feeling of safety of passersby at bus and train stops through lighting design.
The design of this bus stop consists of rounded glass elements that are arranged offset to each other. Light is fed into the panes from the lower edge. The dissolution of the corners of conventional bus stops leads to a redefinition of the existing space. The arrangement of the glass elements creates new possibilities for escape and the feeling of being pushed into a corner is eliminated. An engraving pattern on the pane creates the light emission. Thus, the vertical plane is illuminated. This results in good illumination of faces, an important aspect for being able to perceive other people and their intentions more quickly. The pattern on the glass pane is designed to create a soft and pleasant gradient of light. At about eye level, the density of the pattern decreases. Thus, looking through the pane is guaranteed and the surroundings can still be observed sufficiently. Furthermore, feeding light into the panes allows light to escape from the glass on both sides. In this way, not only the bus stop is illuminated, but also the immediate surroundings.
